Reducing the environmental footprint of commercial shipping has long been high on the priority list of the UN, through the International Maritime Organisation, and the European Union. The focus is on CO2 emissions. The global shipping industry has taken the path of green corridors covering the world’s main routes. Unfortunately, the Mediterranean has lagged behind, since the only green corridor under construction is the one from Suez to Gibraltar, which does not touch European ports. There is an urgent need for greater definition of the lines of development in the field of propulsion, maritime works, port and back-port infrastructures and technical regulations. The technologies are there and it is reassuring that they are different. It is clear that the pathways to the goal of zero or neutral emissions will almost certainly pass through a total management of the energy cycle, starting with the generation of the various carriers used on board ships. At the same time, reducing environmental impact cannot be limited to CO2 emissions. Reducing pollutant emissions (sulphur, but also nitrogen oxides) is always a goal, while standards for neutralising the effects of ballast water are finally being met and an overall ‘leaving no trace’ strategy is being pursued, from waste to plastic.
