Green Ports&Shipping Summit
Reducing the environmental footprint of commercial shipping has long been at the top of the UN’s priority list, through the International Maritime Organization, and of the European Union’s one. The focus is on CO2 emissions. The global shipping industry has embarked on the path of green corridors that cover the main world routes. Unfortunately, the Mediterranean has lagged behind, given that the only green corridor under construction is the one that goes from Suez to Gibraltar, which does not touch European ports. It is urgent to arrive at a better definition of the lines of development in the field of propulsion, maritime works, port and dry port infrastructures and technical regulations. The technologies exist and we are assured that they are diversified. It is clear that the paths to reach the goal of zero or neutral emissions will almost certainly pass through total management of the energy cycle, starting from the generation of the different energy vectors used on board ships. At the same time, reducing the environmental impact cannot be limited to CO2 emissions. Reducing polluting emissions (sulfur, but also nitrogen oxides) is always a goal, while standards for neutralizing the effects of ballast water are finally being implemented and a comprehensive “leaving no trace” strategy is being aimed at, from waste to plastic.
